Godfrey J. Dillard, Esq

Godfrey Dillard, Esq. is an accomplished legal mind in the Detroit area. He prevailed as the lead attorney arguing in front of the United States Supreme Court against University of Michigan for their discriminatory admissions policies.

Dillard was one of the first African American students recruited to play basketball at Vanderbilt University in 1966. Godfrey helped break the color barrier in the SEC as one of the first African American Scholarship Basketball players at Vanderbilt University. Nike did a documentary and Vanderbilt also placed a monument on the campus grounds in his honor.

“Alpha Delta played an important role in my overcoming my struggles in Nashville and the SEC during the 1960’s. The fraternity helped me overcome the isolation and discrimination I was experiencing by opening its arms, soul and heart to a non-member of Fisk. I will always be eternally grateful.”

There wasn’t a chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity Inc. at Vanderbilt University during this time and so Godfrey Dillard was initiated at the Alpha Delta chapter at Fisk University on November 25, 1967. He currently serves as a active member of the Detroit Alumni Chapter.
