Alpha Delta Chapter


Founded

The Alpha Delta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated was founded December 3, 1927 on the campus of Fisk University by Earl Burris Dickerson at the Morris Memorial Building in Nashville on Fourth and Charlotte Avenue. Participating in the installation were F.L. Forbes and “Bear” Blackburn of the Pi Chapter, Dr. H.H. Walker of Nashville Alumni, T. J. Long of Louisville Alumni and M.L. Smith of Kappa Chapter.

Charter Members

The charter members were Bristow Myers, Polemarch; Darnell Mitchell, Vice Polemarch; Rufus Watson, Keeper of Records; Fred Carter, Keeper of Exchequer; Foraker Cabell, Strategus; William T Spencer, Lieutenant Strategus; Charles Wesley Morgan, Chairman of the Board and Theodore Owens, Peyton Roberts, Francis Burton, Edward Pierce, C. Felton Gayles (Pi 1921), E. Motis Johnson and Paul Edward Davis.

Notable AD Nupes

Maceo A Walker initiated 1/27/1929 at the 65th Grand Chapter December 26, 1983 received the coveted Laurel Wreath Award.

Samuel P. Massieinitiated in 1939, a genius, chemist and teacher, born 1919 in North Little Rock, Arkansas. A 1939 Alpha Delta initiate and past Polemarch of Nashville (TN) Alumni Chapter, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. A graduate of Fisk University and Iowa State University where he earned his PhD in Chemistry. Inspired by his fathers asthma, he set out to find a cure. Massie subsequently became president of North Carolina College at Durham. In 1996, President Lyndon Johnson appointed Massie to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland where he became the first African American professor at the institution, where he created the Academy’s black studies program.

Gregory D. Ridley Jr. initiated 5/17/1947 was listed in Who’s Who American Art. A sculptor painter and repose artist in over 500 public and private collections throughout the United States.

Alcee Lamar Hastings initiated 11/27/1954 was first appointed a U.S. District Court Judge for a southern district of Florida then elected to US House of Representatives. Appointed by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, he became the first African-American Federal Judge in the state of Florida, and served in that position for ten years. In 1992 he was elected to Congress as the first African-American from Florida since the post-Civil War. Alcee Lamar Hastings received the Laurel Wreath award at the 77th Grand Chapter in 2007.

Charles Wesley “Ceedy” Morgan, III initiated 11/29/1969 first triple life member and past Midwestern Province Keep of Records and Exchequer.
